Holistic dentistry, also known as alternative dentistry, natural dentistry, or biocompatible dentistry, is a form of dental medicine that approaches oral care from a holistic perspective. Holistic dentists are general dentists who use natural remedies and alternative treatments instead of traditional medicines to prevent dental issues such as gum disease and cavities. They believe that dental health is connected to overall health and that taking care of the entire body, along with proper dental care, can improve total health and have a positive impact on our lives.
Some of the key principles of holistic dentistry include:
- Opposition to amalgam fillings: Holistic dentists strongly oppose the use of amalgam in dental fillings.
- Nonsurgical approaches to gum disease: Holistic dentists use nonsurgical approaches to treat gum disease.
- Avoidance of root canal treatments: Holistic dentists believe that root canal treatments may endanger systemic health of the patient through the spread of trapped dental bacteria to the body.
Holistic dentists complete the same dental training as traditional dentists, but they further their training by taking specialized courses in holistic healing. They diagnose and treat conditions like tooth decay, gum disease, tooth infection, enamel degradation, or dry mouth. Holistic dentists work closely with certified naturopathic doctors to evaluate the suitability of different dental materials for each patient.
While many conventional dentists recognize the merit of different preventative approaches to dentistry, some have criticized holistic practices for lack of efficacy of approach and false marketing in their practices. It is important to note that holistic dentistry is not a recognized specialty, which means its definition is up for interpretation by practitioners.
