A hotshot firefighter is a highly trained, specialized wildland firefighter who is part of an Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) . Hotshot crews are considered the most highly trained, skilled, and experienced wildland firefighters, along with smokejumpers. They are qualified to provide leadership for initial-attack and extended-attack on wildland fires. Hotshot crews typically include 20-25 firefighters, including superintendents, squad bosses, senior firefighters, and sometimes first-year firefighters. Their primary mission is to provide a safe, professional, mobile, and highly skilled Type 1 hand crew for all phases of fire management and incident operations. Hotshots are trained and equipped to work in remote areas for extended periods of time with minimal logistical support. They are organized by agencies such as the United States Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, and state/county agencies. Some of the tasks they perform include fireline construction, firing operations, fire suppression, safety and risk mitigation, and emergency response. Hotshot crews are assigned to the most challenging and high-priority fire incidents in the country. Hotshotting is Wildland Fire Management work—Suppression and Prescription—at a high level, for an extended fire season, as part of a team of 20 individuals that becomes, through advanced training.
