The Japanese robe that is commonly known is called a kimono. However, there is also a casual version of the kimono called a yukata, which is usually made of cotton or synthetic fabric and is wrapped around the body and fastened with a sash (obi) . The yukata is traditionally worn after bathing in a communal bath, functioning as a quick way to cover the body and to absorb remaining moisture. It is also the typical dress for guests at ryokan and is often worn in hot spring (onsen) towns. The yukata has also become a popular way of dressing for summer festivals.
