JRPG stands for Japanese Role-Playing Game, which is essentially an RPG designed and produced in Japan. However, the term has evolved over time and can also refer to RPGs made anywhere that are made in the style of a Japanese Role-Playing Game. The standard look and feel of a JRPG was set by Dragon Quest in 1986 and Final Fantasy in 1987. The term JRPG is not a genre but more of an umbrella term that covers a wide array of different RPGs. The most obvious difference between JRPGs and RPGs is the region these games are developed in. JRPGs are typically made by Japanese developers but not exclusively. The majority of JRPGs include a basic stat system, and depending on the genre, the combat system differs. Generally, JRPGs are more story-driven and tend to have a deep linear or non-linear storyline. The differences between JRPGs and RPGs are becoming thinner and thinner as games evolve.
