In the Netflix series "Outer Banks," the main characters are divided into two groups: the Pogues and the Kooks. The Kooks are the wealthy and elite members of the island who live on the north side of the island, also known as Figure 8. They act as if they belong to the island, but some only live there during the summer months and move away when it gets cooler. The term "kook" can also be used in surfing slang to describe a wannabe or a poser who cant hang with the real surfers. Although it is not explicitly stated in the show, the word "kook" is sometimes used to describe people who dont know how to surf. The Pogues, on the other hand, are the working-class group who live near "The Cut," which is the bad side of town. Kie, one of the main characters, spends more time with the Pogues and does not consider herself an official Kook despite her familys background.
