Labia are folds of skin around the vaginal opening and are part of the external female genitalia. The vulva, not the vagina, includes the labia, clitoris, vaginal opening, and the opening to the urethra. There are two sets of labia: the labia majora (outer lips) and the labia minora (inner lips). The labia majora are usually fleshy and covered with pubic hair, while the labia minora are inside the outer lips and begin at the clitoris and end under the opening to the vagina. Labia can be short or long, wrinkled or smooth, and vary in color from pink to brownish black. They can also be asymmetrical, with one lip longer than the other. Labia serve to protect the vaginal and urethral openings from mechanical irritation, dryness, and infections. During sexual stimulation, the labia minora contributes to the arousal of the whole vestibule area and clitoris by spreading lubrication from the glands located in the vagina and around it. It is important to note that vulvas come in all shapes and sizes, and their appearance can change over time.
