A level 2 trauma center is a medical facility that provides comprehensive care for injured patients. It is similar to a level 1 trauma center in that it can manage people with severe injuries, but it does not have the research and publication expectations of a level 1 center. A level 2 trauma center initiates the treatment of all trauma patients and has 24-hour access to general surgeons, as well as availability of anesthesiology, radiology, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, and orthopedic surgery. Sub-specialized care may be necessary to transfer to a level 1 trauma center. Continuing education for all team members involved in trauma care and quality assessment and improvement programs are also key components of a level 2 trauma center.
