A "lid" is a term used by the White House and political campaigns to indicate to reporters, photographers, and television crews that they will not be releasing any other news that day. When the White House announces that its calling a lid, its a signal to those in the news media that there will be no more news coming out of the White House that day. In essence, it means that there will be no additional press briefings or photo opportunities. Presidential campaigns can also call a lid, and it has the same meaning in that context. It can also be called a "full lid". However, calling a lid does not necessarily mean that the Presidents workday is over or that no more newsworthy events will happen that day. The President may still have private meetings, phone calls, or other activities that are not open to the press. Additionally, a lid is not an absolute guarantee: in rare circumstances, the lid may be "lifted" if there is a significant event or development.
