A living will is a legal document that outlines a persons wishes with regard to healthcare, such as their request for or refusal of certain medical treatments or care, in the event that they are unable to make decisions for themselves. It is one form of advance directive, which is a legal document that specifies what actions should be taken for a persons health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves. A living will is used to instruct healthcare providers and caregivers about the course of treatment to follow if the individual has become unable to give informed consent or refusal due to incapacity. It can be very specific or very general, and may provide directives about the use or foregoing of food and water, if supplied via tubes or other medical devices. A living will can also be used to express wishes about the use of various kinds of burdensome medical treatment. It is important to note that a living will is different from a will, which provides legal guidance about a persons estate, property, and financial assets, as well as care for dependents and end-of-life arrangements such as a funeral or memorial service and burial or cremation.
