In rugby, a losing bonus point is a point awarded to a team that loses a match by seven or fewer points. This bonus point is in addition to the standard points awarded for a win, draw, or loss. The losing bonus point was introduced to encourage attacking rugby and more tries in the game. In addition to the losing bonus point, there are other bonus points available in rugby, including a try bonus point for scoring four or more tries in a match. The bonus point system was first introduced in the National Provincial Championship in New Zealand in 1995 and was later used on a large scale at the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. The bonus point system is now used in many rugby union tournaments, including the Six Nations and the Rugby World Cup.
