A low shank sewing machine is a machine where the metal rod that connects the presser foot onto the sewing machine is shorter, allowing for less space between the presser foot and the needle plate. This makes it suitable for sewing common fabrics like cotton, linen, and synthetics. Most domestic sewing machines are low shank, and they are ideal for beginners and hobby sewers, providing versatility and the chance to upgrade machine parts if needed. High shank machines, on the other hand, are typically in the higher end ranges of sewing machine brands and are meant to have space to go through things like multiple layers of denim or canvas. High shank machines are less common, but they are usually a major upgrade once you’ve been sewing for a while, providing more throat space and more power. To determine whether a machine is low shank or high shank, one can measure from the base of the foot to the middle of the screw that holds it on. If it measures 3/4″ or less, the machine is low shank, and if it measures 1″ or more, the machine is high shank.
