The normal body temperature for an adult is around 98.6°F (37°C) . However, recent research shows that the average normal body temperature is a bit lower than that, and it depends on age and the method used to measure temperature. In one study, the average temperature of 96 adults over two weeks ranged from 35.2°C (95.4°F) to 37.4°C (99.3°F) . A body temperature below 95°F (35°C) is considered abnormally low and is known as hypothermia, which is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. If an adult has a body temperature of 96.6°F (35.9°C) but is not ill and does not have any other symptoms, they do not need to see a doctor or go to the ER. However, older adults and infants with a body temperature of 96.6°F (35.9°C) should be evaluated.
