Luxor is a city located in the south of Upper Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile River and part of the ancient city of Thebes. The name Luxor means "The Palaces" in Arabic, and during ancient times, it was known as "The city of Hundred Doors". Luxor was the capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom and was considered the "Glorious city" of the god Amon-Ra. The city is renowned for its high social status, luxury, and as a center for wisdom, art, religious and political hierarchy. Luxor is considered by many to be the globes greatest open-air museum, as it holds some of the most majestic temples such as the Valley of the Kings, the Karnak temple, Queen Hatshepsut temple, and Luxor temple that holds some of the most extraordinary monuments and artifacts. The city still has an active population of over half a million people that depend almost entirely on tourism. The climate in Luxor is quite sunny and hot with average temperatures of 40 C (104 F) in the summer months and 22 C (71.6 F) during the winter months.
