A macerator toilet, also known as an upflush toilet, is a type of toilet that uses a macerator pump to grind up solid waste and pump it through small-diameter piping to the main plumbing stack or septic tank. The macerator pump is located behind the toilet or in the wall and uses a rotating blade to grind up the waste and mix it with water, forming a slurry. The waste is then pumped up PVC piping to the main plumbing stack or septic tank, which can be up to 15 feet upward and 150 feet away horizontally, depending on the power of the pump.
Macerator toilets are a good option for situations where traditional gravity-flush toilets cannot be installed, such as in basements or areas far from the main plumbing stack. They are also useful in RVs and boats, where space is limited and traditional plumbing systems may not be feasible.
Advantages of macerator toilets include flexible installation location, ease of installation, and the ability to handle multiple fixtures in a bathroom. However, they also have some disadvantages, such as higher water consumption and the potential for the pump to make a grinding noise every time the toilet is flushed.
