In Spanish and Portuguese cultures, a madrina is a godmother or matron of honor. The term is used in the context of weddings, where the madrina is a member of the wedding party and plays a special role in the ceremony. In Mexican tradition, the madrina is one of the Padrinos & Madrinas, or godparents/sponsors, who help the couple organize their wedding and participate in ceremony rituals. The madrina de ramo is responsible for purchasing the bouquet that the bride gifts the Virgin Mary at the end of the ceremony, while the madrina de cojines is responsible for the cushions that the couple kneels on during the ceremony. Being chosen as a Padrino or Madrina is considered a big honor, and these godparents remain as mentors to the couple post-wedding.
