The Maryland Terrapin is a species of turtle native to the Chesapeake Bay area and is the official state reptile of Maryland. The diamondback terrapin is also the official mascot of the University of Maryland, College Park. The Terrapins football team represents the University of Maryland, College Park in the sport of American football and competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and the Big Ten Conference. The teams official colors of red, white, black, and gold have been in use in some combination since the 1920s and are taken from Marylands state flag, and the Terrapins nickname — often abbreviated as "Terps" — was adopted in 1933 after the diamondback terrapin. The diamondback terrapin is a unique turtle species that lives exclusively in brackish water. The word “terrapin” comes from an Algonquin word for edible turtles that live in brackish water. The mascot of the University of Maryland, Testudo, is a bronze statue of a diamondback terrapin and has been the symbol for the campus for more than 80 years.
