A Masters License is a type of license that allows the operator to transport passengers on an inspected passenger vessel. Inspected vessels are allowed to carry more than six passengers, and they must have a Certificate of Inspection (COI) that states the number of passengers allowed and the area of operation. There are two types of Masters Licenses: Inland and Near Coastal. The Inland license allows the operator to take passengers upon inland waters only, while the Near Coastal license allows the operator to take passengers up to 200 miles offshore. The USCG Masters License is the highest level license that one can earn, and it allows the operator to operate inspected vessels carrying seven passengers or more, such as dinner boats, water taxis, ferries, dive boats, and party boats, as well as uninspected (six-pack) vessels. The license comes in three versions: 25, 50, or 100 ton, and the amount of sea service time and the size of the vessels one has been on will influence the license they are eligible for. To obtain a Masters License, one must meet certain eligibility requirements, including age, sea experience, and passing required exams.
