Matriculation is the formal process of becoming a student or enrolling in a college or university. It is the ceremony that marks a students formal admission to the institution. The matriculation procedures and traditions vary from school to school. Some institutions hold a formal ceremony where students take the Matriculation Oath of the university and symbolically touch the faculty mace and shake the deans hand. Other institutions may hold a brief public address from a school official and treat students to performances by the schools music or theater departments. During the matriculation process, students may be required to fill out paperwork indicating their intent to attend, pay a deposit, attend an orientation session, and have their completed coursework reviewed to determine class standing. At the end of the process, students become eligible to register for classes and school services.
