A McTwist is a skateboard trick consisting of a front flip combined with a 540-degree rotation. It was invented by Mike McGill in 1984 and is usually grabbed mute. The trick is a transitional trick that is performed on a half-pipe. The name "McTwist" is derived from a combination of the "Mc" in McGill and the word "twist". The trick was groundbreaking when it was first executed and continues to be performed in the 21st century. Tony Hawk, inspired by the McTwist, invented a 720-degree aerial and named it the "McHawk" as a homage to McGill. Shaun White was filmed performing a double McTwist on a snowboard at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
To perform a McTwist, one needs to know how to do a backside mute grab. A mute grab is when you grab between your foot and your knee with your front hand. Before attempting the trick, it is recommended to wear pads. Here are the steps to perform a McTwist:
- Gain enough speed and approach the half-pipe at a slight angle.
- As you reach the top of the half-pipe, crouch down and grab the board with your front hand between your foot and your knee.
- Begin to initiate a front flip while still holding the grab.
- As you complete the front flip, begin to rotate your body 540 degrees.
- Release the grab and prepare to land back on the half-pipe.
It is important to practice the trick in a safe environment and to wear proper safety gear.
