Modifiers can be adjectives, adverbs, phrases, or clauses that add detail to a sentence and make it more specific. Adjectives modify nouns, while adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Modifiers can also modify subjects, objects, or predicates. Misplaced modifiers occur when a modifier is ambiguously or illogically modifying a word. Dangling modifiers occur when the word or phrase being modified is missing from the sentence. To avoid confusion, modifiers should be placed near the word they modify.
