Narcissism is a self-centered personality style characterized by an excessive preoccupation with oneself and ones own needs, often at the expense of others. Narcissism exists on a continuum that ranges from normal to abnormal personality. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental health condition that involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration. Symptoms of NPD include a sense of self-importance, preoccupation with power, beauty, or success, entitlement, interpersonal exploitation for their own gain, arrogance, lack of empathy, need for admiration, and envy of others or belief that others are envious of them. People with NPD may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others, and they may be generally unhappy and disappointed when theyre not given the special favors or admiration that they believe they deserve. Narcissists are not bad people, but their behavior can be problematic. Treatment for NPD centers around talk therapy, also called psychotherapy.
