A neocon, or neoconservative, is a political ideology that emerged in the United States during the 1960s among conservative-leaning Democrats who became disenchanted with the partys foreign policy. The term "neoconservative" refers to those who made the ideological journey from the anti-Stalinist Left to the camp of American conservatism. Neoconservatives typically advocate the promotion of democracy and American national interest in international affairs, including by means of military force, and are known for espousing disdain for communism and political radicalism. They support actively promoting democracy around the world, even if that means using military force. The term has also been used to describe foreign policy and war hawks who support aggressive militarism or neo-imperialism. In social policy, it stands for a broad sympathy with a traditionalist agenda and a rejection of extreme libertarianism.
