NES stands for New Education System, which is a program implemented by the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to improve outcomes for underperforming schools. The program includes a set of reforms aimed at transforming campuses, such as a uniform curriculum, a new employee evaluation system, and additional support in areas like course curriculum offerings, PowerPoints, and demonstrational learning. NES schools are priority schools in HISD that will be provided resources and support to dramatically improve outcomes for their students. The program includes 28 schools in the Wheatley, Kashmere, and North Forest high schools feeder patterns, including 19 elementary schools and nine secondary schools. Teachers in NES schools are set to receive aides and apprentices who will take care of tasks like grading papers, making copies, and discipline, and teachers will get standardized lesson plans. NES schools will be reconstituted, and teachers must reapply for their jobs. Those hired will receive significant pay raises, according to the district.
