A NEXUS card is a form of identification that can be used instead of a passport or a permanent resident card when entering Canada or the United States. It is a Trusted Traveler Program designed for pre-approved, low-risk travelers. The program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing when entering the United States and Canada. NEXUS members use dedicated processing lanes at designated northern border ports of entry, NEXUS kiosks when entering Canada by air, and Global Entry kiosks when entering the United States via Canadian Preclearance airports. NEXUS members also receive expedited processing at marine reporting locations.

If you are approved to participate in NEXUS, you will receive a membership identification card to use when entering Canada or the United States at all designated NEXUS air, land, and marine ports of entry. However, carrying a valid passport and/or proof of permanent residence is still recommended in case you are required to prove your citizenship or permanent residence status. NEXUS cards are valid for RFID Ready Lanes at land crossings into the United States from Canada and Mexico.

To activate your NEXUS card, you need to log into your TTP account and click on the “Activate Membership Card” button under the Program Membership(s) section on the Homepage. The NEXUS membership card is valid for five years, and there is a non-refundable $50 (USD) application processing fee. Children under 18 are free, but everyone needs their own card to benefit.

In summary, a NEXUS card is a Trusted Traveler Program membership identification card that allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers expedited processing when entering Canada or the United States at all designated NEXUS air, land, and marine ports of entry. It is a valid document under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), so it can be used in place of a passport, including by air if flying between the US and Canada.
