A non-binary person is someone whose gender identity does not fit within the traditional binary notion of male or female. Instead, non-binary individuals may experience their gender as a mix of both, neither, or something entirely outside these categories. This term serves as an umbrella for diverse identities that go beyond the male/female binary. Some non-binary people might identify as genderqueer, genderfluid, agender, or bigender, among other labels. Their gender identity can be fluid, meaning it changes over time, or it can be fixed outside of binary definitions. Non-binary identities recognize that gender is much more complex than just man or woman and is more about an internal experience and personal understanding of self rather than biological sex. While many non-binary persons also identify as transgender, meaning their gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth, not all do. Gender identity is also separate from sexual orientation. In summary, a non- binary person neither fully identifies as a man nor a woman, and this identity provides space outside binary gender norms to express and actualize one's true sense of self.
