A pentacle is a talisman used in magical evocation, usually made of parchment, paper, cloth, or metal, upon which a magical design is drawn. It is almost always shaped as disks or flat circles and may be sewn to the chest of ones garment, hung from ones neck, or placed flat upon the ground or altar. The term "pentacle" is often used interchangeably with "pentagram," which is a five-pointed star that can be drawn with one continuous line. However, in many Wiccan traditions, a pentacle refers to a pentagram circumscribed by a circle. The pentagram has been used throughout history as a symbol of health, knowledge, and spirituality. In modern times, the pentagram is most often associated with Neo-Pagan religions, especially Wicca, and is often depicted enclosed in a circle, a symbol known as a pentacle. The five points of the pentagram often represent the five elements of air, fire, water, earth, and spirit. Many Neo-Pagans consider the pentagram a symbol of protection and may use it to invoke or banish spirits.
