A PHEV, or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, is a type of car that combines a combustion engine with an electric motor and battery. The battery can be charged using a wall outlet or charging equipment, by the combustion engine, or through regenerative braking. PHEVs have larger batteries than conventional hybrids, and they can be plugged in to add even more electric range, typically around 20 to 40 miles when fully charged, depending on the vehicle. When the battery is depleted, the car automatically switches over to use the combustion engine. PHEVs are a good option for those interested in buying an electric car but worried about where to charge on a road trip. They can handle a typical commute to work or school on electric power, just like an EV, but they can also fill up at gas stations when needed. PHEVs have much smaller batteries than fully electric cars, typically measuring around 10 to 20 kWh in size, but they also do without the rapid charging tech that allows EVs to be topped up in under an hour. PHEVs have a habit of being the most powerful versions in model ranges, and they boast great gas mileage without the change in lifestyle that comes with switching to a fully electric vehicle.
