A PICC nurse is a health professional who is responsible for inserting, maintaining, and removing Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) . A PICC is a long, thin tube that is inserted through a vein in the arm and passed through to the larger veins near the heart. The PICC nurse is responsible for placing the catheter into a patients arm and guiding the catheter up into the main vein near the heart where blood flows quickly. They also suture the PICC line in place and cover the site with a sterile bandage. The PICC nurse is responsible for monitoring the PICC line for complications, including infection and blood clots. They are also responsible for administering substances intravenously in peripheral veins, typically in the upper arm. To become a PICC nurse, one must complete a nursing program and obtain a nursing license. Additional training and certification in PICC line insertion may also be required.
