A pistol brace, also known as a stabilizing brace or arm brace, is a rear-mounted gun accessory that allows a handgun to be strapped to a persons forearm for added stability. The brace uses Velcro to attach the firearm to the arm, further stabilizing the gun. Pistol braces were first marketed in 2012 as a way of attaching a pistol to the shooters forearm, stabilizing it and making it easier to use for disabled people. However, many users found that the braces could also be placed against the shoulder, like the stock on a rifle. The ATF has been trying to ban pistol braces, and in the summer of 2022, moved to regulate them with a measure that would reclassify many pistols using such devices as short-barreled rifles. The legality of pistol braces is not clear, and there is a furious row between the ATF, which is trying to ban them, and Republican lawmakers, who are ready to go to war with the Biden administration to keep them legal.
