A platinum album is a music recording that has sold one million units. The platinum certification was introduced in 1976 for the sale of one million units for albums. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awards platinum certifications to albums that have sold at least one million copies. The RIAA also created the Multi-Platinum award in 1984, which honors albums that have sold two million or more copies. An album that becomes Platinum twice over, for example, an album which has sold 2,000,000 copies in the United States, is said to be "Double-Platinum", or sometimes "Multi-Platinum". The RIAA bases its awards on retail sales to consumers.
