A precept is a commandment, instruction, or order intended as an authoritative rule of action. It can be a general rule of action or a specific command that is intended to urge the observance of law. Precepts can be religious or secular in nature, and they are often passed down as little life lessons. In religion, precepts are usually commands respecting moral conduct. In Catholicism, the "Commandments of the Church" may also be called "Precepts of the Church". In law, a precept is a command in writing, and it is now chiefly used of an order demanding payment. The term is applied by local precepting authorities as part of the Council Tax system in the UK.
