A precinct election official (PEO) is an individual appointed by the county board of elections to work at a polling location on Election Day. The primary function of a PEO is to ensure that the election process is handled in an orderly, professional, and lawful manner by performing all duties assigned by the Voting Location Manager (VLM) of the polling location. Some of the duties of a PEO include:

  • Arranging the polling location and setting up the voting machines as directed by the board of elections.
  • Observing voters upon entering and leaving the polling location to ensure that only eligible voters are allowed to vote.
  • Assisting voters with disabilities or limited English proficiency.
  • Counting votes and reporting the results to the board of elections.

In addition to PEOs, there are other election day positions such as the Voting Location Manager (VLM), Voting Location Deputy (VLD), Bilingual Precinct Election Official (PEOST), and Election Substitute Official (ESO) .
