In the Bible, a prophet is a person chosen by God to speak on His behalf. They serve as God's spokespersons, delivering His truth, guidance, and sometimes warnings to the people. The role of a prophet includes both declaring God's word about present issues and revealing details about the future. Prophets were instrumental in guiding the nation of Israel and in the establishment of the church. The English word "prophet" comes from the Greek word "prophetes," meaning "one who speaks forth" or "advocate." The Hebrew word for prophet is "navi," which means "one who is called" or "one who announces." Biblical prophets often had a teaching and revelatory role. They could see visions and had spiritual insight, sometimes referred to as "seers." Prophets are tasked with faithfully speaking God's word, correcting moral and religious abuses, proclaiming great moral truths connected to the character of God, and sometimes foretelling future events. However, foretelling the future is an incidental, not necessary, part of their role. Famous biblical prophets include Moses, Isaiah, Samuel, and many others, including some women prophets like Miriam and Deborah. There were also false prophets who claimed to speak for God but did not. In essence, a prophet is the mouthpiece of God, conveying His mind, will, and messages to humanity, influencing both the people and their leaders with God's directives.
