A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has received extensive, highly-focused training in tooth replacement and restoration. They are dentists who specialize in treating complex dental and facial matters, including the restoration and replacement of missing or damaged teeth with artificial devices. Prosthodontists have completed dental school plus at least three additional years of advanced training and education in an ADA-accredited program. They are extensively trained in state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for treating complex dental conditions. Unlike general dentists, prosthodontists specialize in repairing natural teeth and replacing missing teeth with artificial teeth (dentures), dental implants, caps, or crowns. They also work with people with head and neck deformities, replacing missing parts of the jaw and face. Prosthodontists also specialize in cosmetic dentistry, which includes veneers, crowns, and bridges to restore and replace teeth. They have a careful understanding of the dynamics of a smile and the preservation of a healthy mouth. Prosthodontists collaborate with all members of the dental team, including other specialty colleagues, general dentists, dental hygienists, and laboratory technicians.
