RCS stands for Rich Communication Services, which is a modern industry standard for messaging that provides an upgraded, rich messaging experience. It is an alternative to SMS and MMS messaging protocols and is designed to offer features similar to those available in popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and iMessage. RCS messages are sent with the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol over Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some of the key features of RCS messaging include:

If your carrier supports RCS but your device isn’t automatically set up for RCS chats, you may get a notification to "Do more with Messages".
