A Recon Marine is a highly trained Infantry Marine skilled in amphibious reconnaissance and ground reconnaissance & surveillance. Recon Marines are part of the United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance, which is a special operations force that supplies military intelligence to the command element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The mission of Force Recon is to conduct amphibious reconnaissance, deep ground reconnaissance, surveillance, battle-space shaping, and limited scale raids in support of the Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), other Marine air-ground task forces, or a joint force. Recon Marines are not considered special operators, but they are "special operations capable" and receive much of the same rigorous training as special operations units. The primary role of Recon Marines is to support the rest of the Marine Corps, rather than conduct stand-alone operations like Marine Raiders or other special operations units.
