A scrub tech, also known as a surgical technologist, is a healthcare professional who plays a vital role in the operating room, contributing to the smooth execution of surgical procedures. They are responsible for preparing the operating room for surgery before the surgeon or patient arrives, ensuring that all required surgical instruments and equipment are in place and the operating room is sterile. They then bring the patient in, cover them with sterile drapes, and clean the incision sites. During the surgery itself, scrub techs become the surgeon’s right hand, passing instruments, sponges, and dressings as required. Beyond this, they might also be called upon to retract tissue, apply suction, or assist with suturing, all while maintaining a sterile environment. Additionally, scrub techs are responsible for restocking the supply room with essential items, and they play a key role in maintaining accurate records during the surgical procedure, ensuring everything proceeds smoothly.

To become a scrub tech, formal education and a specific skill set are required. Prospective scrub techs must complete a diploma, certificate, or associate’s degree program in surgical technology.
