A seraphim is a celestial or heavenly being originating in Ancient Judaism, and the term plays a role in subsequent Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The seraphim are fiery angels who revere God and proclaim His supreme glory. They are portrayed as having two or three pairs of wings and serving as guardians of Gods throne. The name "seraphim" comes from the Hebrew root word "saraph," which means "to burn," and these attendant angels burn with love for God. The seraphim spend day and night worshipping God for His holiness, and during this perpetual worship, they call out to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory". Isaiah chapter 6 is the only place in the Bible that specifically mentions the seraphim, and each seraph had six wings. They used two to fly, two to cover their feet, and two to cover their faces. The seraphim flew about the throne on which God was seated, singing His praises as they called special attention to Gods glory and majesty. These beings apparently also served as agents of purification for Isaiah as he began his prophetic ministry.
