A shadowless Pokemon card is a card from the second print run of the original Base Set released in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast under the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The term "shadowless" refers to the fact that there is no drop shadow underneath the art box on the right side of the card. Shadows were only ever used on Pokemon themselves, and trainer cards never had drop shadows. Shadowless cards are highly sought after by collectors because of their rarity and importance to the history of the card game. They are considerably more valuable than the Unlimited Base Set that was produced shortly after. Shadowless cards can be identified through several key features, including the absence of a drop shadow effect to the right of the character portrait and thinner writing for the HP value typeface. All 1st Edition cards are shadowless, except for the 1st Edition Base Set Machamp, which was always printed with the 1st Edition stamp, whether it was shadowless or not. While all shadowless cards are rare, their value can vary depending on the specific card and its condition.
