A shower diverter is a plumbing device that allows you to switch the flow of water between the bathtub faucet and the showerhead. It is typically found in bathrooms with a shower-tub combination, and it allows you to divert the water back and forth between the tub faucet and the showerhead. When you use the handle on your faucet, you are activating the shower diverter, which is the valve behind the wall that directs the water. There are three main types of shower diverters:
-
Single-Valve Diverter: This type of diverter comes in the form of a pin located on the end of the tub spout. To engage the showerhead, simply pull up on the pin. To switch the water flow back to the tub faucet, push down on the pin.
-
Two-Valve Diverter: A two-valve diverter can either be located in the center of a single faucet that controls temperature, or it can be set between the taps of a two-tap faucet. When you want to take a shower, you lift the knob or lever to close the diverter valve. This creates pressure, forcing the water flow upward and out of the showerhead.
-
Three-Valve Diverter: These are usually found when there are separate knobs for hot and cold water. After you find the right combination of hot and cold water, you turn the third handle clockwise to send the water to the showerhead. When you’re done showering, turn the handle counterclockwise to redirect the water to the tub.
Shower diverters are simple devices, but they can malfunction and need replacing once in a while. If you notice any issues with your shower diverter, such as water leaking from the tub spout while the shower is on, its important to have it fixed to prevent water waste.
