A silo is a structure used for storing bulk materials, particularly in agriculture. Here are some common uses of silos in agriculture:
-
Silage storage: Silos are used to store fermented feed known as silage, which is primarily used to feed dairy cattle. The low-oxygen environment of the silo encourages anaerobic microbes to ferment the forage product, but in a way that ruminants can still digest.
-
Grain storage: Silos can also be used to store dry grain or seed. However, grain bins are more commonly used for this purpose.
-
Forage harvesting: Forage silo filling is performed using a forage harvester which may either be self-propelled with an engine and drivers cab, or towed behind a tractor that supplies power through a PTO.
-
Silo art: Silos can also be used as a canvas for art, as seen in the recent and distinctly Australian art movement known as "silo art".
There are different types of silos, including tower silos, bunker silos, and fabric silos. The first modern silo, a wooden and upright one filled with grain, was invented and built in 1873 in Spring Grove, Illinois by Fred Hatch of McHenry County, Illinois, USA.
