A skipper is a person who has command of a boat or watercraft and is responsible for the operation and navigation of the boat, as well as the comfort and safety of those on board. The skipper is the captain of the boat and is responsible for ensuring that everyone on board knows and adheres to safety protocols, starting from when you check in at the marina. They also know what to do in situations like storms. The skipper on a chartered yacht will have the skills, training, experience, and license required to legally and safely captain the boat (or flotilla, in the case of a group sailing holiday) . The skipper is responsible for keeping everyone safe, operating the equipment, and recommending local spots to visit. The types of skippers include flotilla, charter, and delivery skippers. The tasks of a flotilla skipper include de-fouling propellers, checking and replacing all deck fittings, assisting engineers with out-of-water work, launching, replacing running rigging, hoisting anchors, servicing winches, hoisting sails, fitting biminis, fitting guardrails, checking dinghies, splicing and whipping ropes, and more. A charter skipper manages and captains a yacht that has been hired out to paying guests. This role typically involves taking command of 35 – 60ft yachts (catamarans are particularly popular) operating in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. The skipper is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the yacht, as well as the safety and enjoyment of the guests. A delivery skipper is responsible for the safe delivery of a yacht from one location to another.
