A slice is a type of golf shot in which the golf ball curves dramatically in flight from left to right for a right-handed golfer, and from right to left for a left-handed golfer. It happens when a sidespin is put on the ball, causing it to curve to the right for a right-handed player and to the left for a left-handed player. A slice is a ball that curves away from the players dominant hand. For right-handed players, a sliced ball will travel right, while a sliced ball will travel left for left-handed players.

Several factors contribute to a slice, including an open clubface, an over-the-top downswing, and a poor grip. An open clubface describes the angle of the clubface in relation to the ball, and keeping the clubface square to the ball will drastically reduce the frequency of slices. An over-the-top downswing happens when the weight is not shifted properly throughout the swing, and there is usually too much weight on the back foot, and the club is pulled too far away from the body. A poor grip may be the number one cause of why golfers slice, and holding the club in the palm of the lead hand along with the trail hand placed on top of the shaft will not be able to square the face, resulting in weak shots to the right.

To fix a slice, golfers can work on correcting their grip, clubface angle, and swing path. Ball position also plays a critical role in how a player comes down into impact, and it affects not only the club but also the angle of attack.
