A Sprint Race in Formula 1 is a shorter version of a normal race, taking place over a shorter distance of 100km or 62 miles. It was introduced in 2021 as a way to add more races to the annual calendar and to provide a new format to contrast the traditional Grand Prix weekend schedule. The Sprint Race is essentially a 100km dash to the chequered flag, with no pit stops unless a driver needs to dive in for repairs. The race lasts around 25-30 minutes and is designed to provide a short and fast-paced racing spectacle, similar to a Twenty20 cricket match, with drivers racing flat-out from start to finish. The Sprint Race is held on Saturday, with Qualifying on Friday and the Grand Prix on Sunday. The winner of the Sprint Race picks up eight points, second place scores seven points, and it continues descending down to eighth place with one point. The top eight finishers are awarded points. The tyre rules are different for the Sprint Race, with only soft tyres permitted throughout, and teams and drivers are free to start Sunday’s race on any compound. The Sprint Race format has been polished up for the six events which will run under a sprint schedule in 2023.
