The Sprint Shootout is a new session added to the F1 weekend format in 2023. It is a standalone qualifying session held on Saturday before the Sprint race. The purpose of the Sprint Shootout is to determine the order of the grid for the Sprint race, which is a much shortened version of the Grand Prix, covering 100km of the circuit hosting the event. The starting grid for Sundays Grand Prix is determined in the qualifying session held on Friday. The Sprint Shootout follows the same three-session knockout format as usual qualifying, but each Q1, Q2, and Q3 segment has been shortened to 12 minutes, 10 minutes, and 5 minutes, respectively. The Sprint race does not impact Sundays Grand Prix.
