A sugar apple, also known as sweetsop, is an edible fruit that grows on the Annona squamosa tree, which is native to tropical climates in the Americas and West Indies. The fruit is heart-shaped and has a thick, hard, scaly greenish skin that separates into knobby segments when ripe, revealing the creamy, sweet pulp inside. The pulp comes apart in segments, each containing a shiny black seed. Sugar apples are high in energy and an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese, a good source of thiamine and vitamin B6, and provide vitamin B2, B3, B5, B9, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium in fair quantities. The fruit is typically eaten fresh out-of-hand, served raw and chilled, as a dessert, or used to make ice cream or shakes. The seeds can also be ground for use as an insecticide. Sugar apples are mainly grown in the tropics, but they are also grown in warm locations along the lower southeast and southwest coasts of Florida.
