A surrogate mother is a woman who agrees to carry and deliver a baby for another couple or person who will become the childs parent(s) after birth. There are two types of surrogate mothers: traditional surrogates and gestational surrogates. A traditional surrogate is a woman who gets artificially inseminated with the fathers sperm and carries the baby to term. In this case, the surrogate is the biological mother of the child because it was her egg that was fertilized by the fathers sperm. On the other hand, a gestational surrogate is a woman who carries and delivers a child for a couple or individual but is not genetically related to the child. In this case, doctors create an embryo by fertilizing eggs from the intended mother or an egg donor with sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor, and the embryo is then placed into the uterus of the gestational surrogate. The surrogate then carries the baby until birth. The legal process of surrogacy is tricky and varies from state to state.
