In basketball, a technical foul is a type of foul that does not involve physical contact among opposing players on the court, or simply a foul for a non-player such as a coach. Technical fouls can be assessed against players, bench personnel, the entire team (often called a bench technical), or even the crowd. The most common technical foul is for unsportsmanlike conduct, such as arguing with a referee or taunting an opponent. Other offenses that can result in technical fouls include calling too many timeouts, delay of game, hanging on the rim, or improper substitutions. When calling a technical foul, the referee blows their whistle and makes a âTâ shape with their arms and hands. Technical fouls result in one free throw and possession of the ball for the opposing team. In most American basketball games, two technical fouls are permitted before a player or coach is ejected.
