A terp can refer to different things depending on the context:

• Artificial dwelling mound: A terp, also known as a wierde, woerd, warf, warft, werf, werve, wurt or værft, is an artificial dwelling mound found on the North European Plain that has been created to provide safe ground during storm surges, high tides and sea or river flooding. They were built to "curb natural influences" such as floods by being a part of a network of terpen that rerouted large-scale flooding. Terpen were usually well fertilized by the decay of the rubbish.

• Dance: Terp is a slang term for dance, derived from the Greek goddess of dance and the dramatic chorus, Terpsichore.

• Cannabis: Terpenes or terpenoids are aroma compounds produced in the flower and leaves of the cannabis plant. They are organic hydrocarbons that occur naturally in the essential oils of plants. Technically, terpenes are a combination of carbon and hydrogen. Though the names are used interchangeably, terpenoids are actually terpenes that have been altered through a drying process. Many common terpenes found in the botanical world, like camphor and menthol, may have medicinal benefits. There are at least 100 terpenes that have been identified in the cannabis plant. Terpenes play an important role in the aroma and flavor of a cannabis strain, and they potentially work in synergy with cannabinoids and other cannabis plant compounds to produce psychoactive effects.

• Military or Deaf slang: Terp is a slang term for an interpreter, a person who translates.
