A thumb drive, also known as a USB flash drive, is a small, portable, and rewritable data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. It is typically removable, rewritable, and much smaller than an optical disc, with most weighing less than 30 g. Thumb drives are powered by a USB interface, which is also the connection used to write, read, and transfer data between the drive and other devices. They are one of the most economical ways to facilitate data transfer and are smaller, more durable, faster, and can hold more data than CD/DVD formats or older, outdated forms of storage like floppy disks. Thumb drives are mainly used to transfer, edit, and store files, and they have the ability to store files for 10+ years, depending on the kind of drive and how they’re used and stored. Some common uses of thumb drives include holding and transferring documents or presentations for school or work, storing videos and photos, and transferring files without the internet, such as large files that would not be easy to transfer or sensitive files that require security. Thumb drives are also used in arcade games to transfer high scores, screenshots, dance edits, and combos throughout sessions. While thumb drives are convenient, they can pose security threats since they are easily concealed, and users could copy proprietary information to them at work or upload malware from them, all undetected by the system administrator.
